http://www.discoverhaiti.com/history00_4_1.htm
http://www.commondreams.org/views04/1011-27.htm
http://www.glencoe.com/sec/socialstudies/btt/columbus/native_peoples.shtml
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/580786/Taino
All of which attest to the genocide of the Taino people begun by Columbus.
Who would I pick instead? Hmm, maybe Francis of Assisi, or to pick a more contemporary figure, Shaine Claiborne. Both people who let their convictions utterly shape their life, and who definitely, in your words, "aspire to something more than owning the latest muscle car or climbing to the top of the corporate ladder".

A quick search for “Columbus” and “Taino” turn up sites such as these:

<a

Well, I'm not sure how to respond to all that, but I'll take on the last part.
Anything new starts off small. Christian spec fic is still in its infancy. Look at the early efforts in secular sf and fantasy and none of them would sell today if new to the market because they thought small. Thing is, today's "small" was yesterday's "gigantic." Jules Verne would today be considered sf for beginners, yet he was a giant of his era.
Same goes for Christian spec fic. It IS getting better.

Ken,

Well, I’m not sure how to respond to all that, but I’ll take on the last part.

Anything new starts off small. The first rule of Wikipedia is that you NEVER rely on it for information about contentious issues or people. And Columbus is just such a person. You're not likely to get both sides of the story on some of those people and issues.
Columbus' own journals show how the actions of those under him grieved him to no end. If Columbus had a fault, it was that he was too trusting of others. That fault got him into trouble repeatedly.
